Bringing continuous improvement to industrial software

Industrial manufacturers can get more value from software by treating it as a continuously evolving asset rather than a long-term fixed investment

Gayle Silverman, Principal Strategist at TXI, was recently featured in Automation World with a contributed article titled “Bringing continuous improvement to industrial software.”

In the piece, Gayle asks why industrial organizations that apply continuous improvement to safety, training, and equipment still treat software as a fixed, long-term investment. That approach made sense when a system was expected to last decades. With technology changing as fast as it is now, software scoped over several years can be outdated the day it launches.

Gayle makes the case for building for today’s needs plus a little beyond, then improving from there. Smaller, more frequent updates are easier for teams to learn, and the gains compound over time. She also argues for tying software directly to the business results it drives, so its value is visible to more than the few people who know where the wins came from.
